Juliet James is one of those girls you just want to hang out and skate with. She's super nice, positive, and fun. At just 15 years old and with only 2 years of skating under her feet she is pushing ahead and skating different parks up and down the coast of California with a group of skater friends to learn to skate new terrain, try new tricks and now, she's entering her very first contest. Read on to see what this rad skater girl is up to!

Technically Skater’s Point in Santa Barbara, but I spend more time at the Ojai skatepark.

The feeling of accomplishment when you learn a new trick, and all the awesome people you get to meet through skateboarding.

Three things you don't know about me:

1. I’m a vegetarian

2. I lived in Wales from when I was seven to when I was fourteen but I don’t have an accent.

3. I have this weird superstition that if you say what you hope the weather will be, it will be the opposite.

What’s Next?

I’m going to be skating in Amateur Bowl at Exposure on November 8th. This will be my first time competing so I am really nervous, but I know that I’m going to have tons of fun and that it will be a great experience. I just need to keep reminding myself that everyone is super supportive so I should just focus on skating and having fun, and not worry about all the people watching me.

We still remember the day we met Emma for the first time. It was at an all girls skate session at The Berrics. A few girls started talking about the possibility of hitting up another spot later that had some vert. Emma and her friends were down with that plan and before we knew it they were inviting all of us to follow them to a spot they knew of in Hollywood. That's the kind of girl Emma is and we think that's pretty rad.  If you are at Exposure Skate Contest this Saturday, make sure you tell her "hi" and cheer her on - she will be the girl smiling & ripping.

Who's Rad?      Emma Storm

Age?     21

Home is?    Originally from Napa Valley but I have been living in Santa Barbara for about 3 and a half years.

Home Park or Skate spot is?      Skater’s Point in Santa Barbara

How Long Have You Been Skateboarding?      About a year and a half

What do you enjoy most about skateboarding?

Skateboarding saved me. When I started skating, I started to discover myself. I began to learn that I was capable of so many things that I never thought I could do. I would always watch these people and say, “Man, I wish I could do that.” Now, I am doing it. My favorite thing about skateboarding is that it pushes me to try new things and I challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone. Even falling, I like because it reminds me that sometimes, you have to fall in life if you ever want to get anywhere. I am so grateful for all of the amazing people and experiences that skateboarding has brought into my life; I am one lucky lady.

Favorite music to skate to?

Black Sabbath, Black Flag, Beastie Boys, Led Zeppelin, Old School Funk, Sublime, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Misfits, Dead Kennedys

Girls Who Skate that inspire YOU:

Julz Lynn, Lizzie Armanto, Allysha Bergado, Arianna Carmona, Sarah Thompson, Gaby Ponce, Mimi Knoop, Cassie Oseguera, Melissa Sullivan, Amy Treadway

Favorite place you've ever skated?      The Mike Fox skate park in Santa Cruz

Favorite Trick or maneuver?     Bean Plants, feebles, backside airs and grinding pool coping is the best feeling.

Sponsors:      BrokinBonz Clothing

Three Things You Don't Know About Me:

1. I’m a vegetarian
2. I have a 19-pound cat who is on a diet; his name is Winston.
3. I’m a singer in a jam band

What’s Next?

I will be competing at EXPOSURE on November 8th, 2014. I’m nervous but really excited just to be a part of such a wonderful event, and to meet so many new and amazing people. The tricks that I’m currently working on are bonelesses, no comply, kickflips and pop shove-its.

We love hearing about people who grew up skateboarding, still love it as adults, and give back to the sport.

Pearl Jam's bassist, Jeff Ament, has quietly been funding & getting skateparks built in his home state of Montana for years now. He has been targeting smaller more rural communities where others may not have built a skatepark, so skaters don't have to travel so far to do something they love.

But this new skatepark is his biggest venture to date.

The new park is being built in Browning, Montana. Browning is the largest community on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and the new skatepark is 12,000 square feet and built to replicate the feel of "The Big O" - one of our fav Southern California skate parks from the 70's.  The Browning skatepark is set to open Spring 2015, so if you live in Montana you may want to check it out - it sounds like it's going to be amazing!

Afghan Skater Girl Photo Chosen For Exhibit.

Info and photos via Creative Review blog

The winners of the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2014 have been announced -
59 images including the winning work have been chosen from 4,193 submissions, to be exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery from 13 Nov 2014 until 22 Feb 2015.

We love that Second prize went to Jessica Fullford-Dobson, for Skate Girl - a portrait of a seven-year-old Afghan girl at a skate school in Kabul.

‘The series reveals that Afghan girls are like any others in the world," explains Fulford-Dobson. "What I loved about this girl, was how immaculately dressed and composed she was. The skate hall is a dusty, noisy place filled with laughter and yelps of excitement as the girls skateboard freely, up, down and around with their robes and scarves flying."

Love it! Congrats Jessica!

There is nothing better than a positive story to share. This one comes out of Exposure Skate.

XS Helmets was the sponsor of the girls skate clinic put on by GRO at last Saturday's skate event and it was awesome because it was absolutely free & girls could sign up to learn skateboarding basics, or sharpen their skills with one of the many volunteers.

A young girl named Callia showed up, and while she had had a few lessons at the Santa Clarita skatepark where she lives, she had never been around so many girls who did what she loved to do. Callia had been talking about the event to her mom and dad for weeks but when it came time for her skate lesson she was a little nervous being out of her own environment. Volunteer Angela Strong (who is not much older than Callia and a great little role model) stepped in, as did Courtney from GRO, to reassure her and make her feel comfortable. She was still a tiny bit nervous, so I decided to introduce her to Poppy Starr Olsen.

Poppy's event was already under way and her division was up next, but she smiled and said to Callia "come on let's skate" and took Callia down into the flat area with a small roll in and started teaching her to roll down it.

Poppy had flown half way across the world from her home in Australia, to compete in a very important women's event and yet she never hesitated to help another young girl out & encourage her - even if it was literally minutes before her heat. She could have easily said  "I'm so sorry my heat is next but how about after?" and that would have been completely OK and understandable, but no, she jumped right in and made this little girls day.

Callia went back to her hotel near the skatepark that night and asked her dad to pull up every single video he could find on the internet with Poppy in it and watched them until she fell asleep. She will remember Poppy's kindness forever, has become Poppy's #1 fan and now feels that she is part of girls skateboarding in a bigger way thanks to Poppy. That is what skateboarding is all about.

* Poppy went on that day to win both the under 14 years of age bowl and vert competitions.

Yeah Poppy!

Exposure Skate was going off all day long last Saturday, & the day ended with the vert contest where the girls - especially Gaby Ponce - were launching super high airs out of the pipe. The level of skating at this contest was some of the best I have ever seen. But best of all, every single girl looked like she was having the time of her life. And isn't that what skateboarding is all about?

Please note - we are missing a memory card that has the 15 & over & some of 14 & under vert photos - as soon as it's found (fingers crossed) we will post!

Thanks to Amelia Brodka for making this contest a reality - what she is doing for women's skateboarding is huge!

Skater Girl Inspiration in 8x10.

 All photos Joanne Barratt

When I was growing up,  I used to cut any photo I saw of a girl skateboarding out of Skateboarder Magazine and tape it on my bedroom wall. The pictures were usually less than a quarter page but I loved knowing there were other girls out there just like me who skated.

That's all changed for the better. There are so many girls shredding, and almost all of them were at Exposure Skate this past weekend. And the best part is, photographer Joanne Barratt had an amazing photo booth set up and captured these rad girls in gorgeous black & white prints.

Now you can get a 8x10 picture of your daughter (or son's!) favorite skater for her/his bedroom wall,  or if one of these shots is of you, or your own daughter, then how about a print for your mom, dad, aunts, uncles or grandparents for the holidays?

If you would like to purchase a high resolution version for personal use or an 8x10 print of any of the images , they are $25 each (plus tax and shipping on prints) and HALF of that goes back to start funding the next EXPOSURE event!

You can see all the images HERE  & you can email Joanne directly @joanne@islandstyleimages.com about any images you'd like to order.

Please note: If you would like to use any of these images for commercial use (your business, your sponsors business, your neighbors business, your dog's business etc… ) then please contact Joanne directly via phone or email to discuss a usage agreement !

Joanne's  Photo Booth is available for other events so keep her in mind of you know of something fun that could use it!

Thanks again for your continued support of all of the girls who love skateboarding!

CBS Trailer

The piece below was written by pro skateboarder Holly Lyons who is part of this amazing CBS special, speaking about girls skating in Afghanistan.

Skateistan in Afghanistan.

TODAY, Sunday, November 16 at 12 NOON PST and 3 PM EST please check out CBS "Courage in Sports".

*Please check your area to see what time it plays as we are getting conflicting info depending on what cable service you have - thanks!

It's so incredible to think that more girls skate in Afghanistan than anywhere else in the world! Skateistan founder Oliver Percovich has made such a massive difference for these girls in Afghanistan and I'm confident he will continue to impact so many other countries around the world.

In so many countries girls still are not allowed to participate in most sports activities or get educated. This movement alone can really change the way that adults see their children, and how people see females and what's possible in their lives.

Skateboarding is such a unique way for people to express themselves. Skateboarding is a feeling that nobody can give you and nobody can take away from you. It's free and it's for everyone! No matter who you are, what you look like or where you came from, anyone and everyone can feel the feeling that skateboarding gives!!   FREEDOM

I'm very grateful to have of been asked to speak about Skateistan on CBS along with Tony Hawk and the founder. Please check it out!!

Whether we are girls or boys, women or men, we are all people and all have the right to live a full life, feel alive, have fun and fully express ourselves. Skate 4 Life!!!

So stoked to see Jen Marony who heads up Chill Foundation here in Los Angeles, bring some rad young girls to Exposure Skate contest. These young girls got to see some incredible skating, skate a bit themselves, and have an awesome time. They also became GN4LW fans - we love that!

If you are not familiar with Chill you should check them out. Founded by Jake & Donna Burton-Carpenter it's a pretty amazing organization.  Chill's core youth development program revolves around a six-week curriculum that uses snowboarding to teach life skills and increase self-esteem in underserved youth between the ages of 10-18. Their six weekly themes; patience, persistence, responsibility, courage, respect, and pride, provide a framework for learning and personal growth.

Thanks to Jen and Chill for coming out!
