Huge thanks to NBC's, Lolita Lopez and Azucena Varela, for spending time at Hermosa Skatepark to film a segment on Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word for their series LIFE CONNECTED with skateboarders Jordyn Barratt, Vianez Morales and Quinne Daniels.  Such a fun day, and having an all female crew + skaters was pretty cool. The girls had a chance to speak on camera about all aspects of being a female skateboarder, and what Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word is all about.

You can see the entire segment HERE

Thanks to The City of Hermosa Beach, The Hermosa Historical Society, Brigid Dowd, and Chris Miller for pitching in to make this all happen.

Fifteen year old skateboarder Leah Ho, has become the newest LA84 Youth SAMbassador!

Other criteria is; maintaining good grades in school, being active in a structured sports program, being civically involved and inspired by the Olympic values, and to be willing to provide feedback, guidance and advice on LA84 Foundations work, service areas and impact.

She has internship possibilities during summer months, as well as volunteer work with the foundation, including performing as the LA84 Foundation mascot, Sam the Eagle at events.

Just One Quaifier (So Far) For Female Skaters in Vans Park Series Schedue.

Photos from last years Vans Park Series via Ian Logan

Looks like the Vans Park Series will be making 5 stops before the World Championships that will be held in the USA.

Unfortunately, at this point, it seems that the women's events will only be included in ONE of those stops prior to the finals. That means the women have only one chance to qualify for the World Championships and only 2 stops (including the finals) to add to their income for the year.

The men will compete in Australia (March 4),  Brazil (April 8th), Sweden (May 27), Canada (July 8) and both men and women will compete on August 1-5 in the USA. The women will also be included in the final in September at a location that is  TBD.

We applaud Vans as they have  been doing a lot over the years to help women gain visibility in the sport, but they can't do it all.

The question is, what we can we do collectively as a group to raise more awareness and more sponsorship dollars so women can be included in all 5 qualifiers?

We have women who are definitely qualified to compete, and live in Brazil, Australia, Sweden and Canada - so that makes it doubly hard and expensive for them to come to the US to compete in these two events.

If the women can not make a living from competing, then their sponsors will be need to step up even more to assist them with their living expenses throughout the year, yet sponsors will shy away from giving women the sponsorship deals they deserve, if competition coverage isn't there.

It's a vicious circle, and one that women in skateboarding have been dealing with since the 1970's.

So what is the answer?   We'd love to hear your thoughts!

* We have calls into Vans as well as the ISF asking these questions and are awaiting a response.

Saudi Women Skateboarding in This Music Video Clip.

$

We had to share this video and info from Carbonated TV this morning. So awesome!!

The nearly three-minute clip starts off with three niqab-clad women in black abayas getting into a car while a little boy takes the wheel – a jibe at the country’s notorious driving ban on women as well as the guardianship system, according to which women can’t travel without a male guardian.

Later in the video, however, the women can be seen skateboarding, dancing, playing basketball, enjoying bumper car rides, which is apparently the only way they can defy the country’s ultra-conservative (read: sexist) driving ban, despite men constantly reminding them they are not supposed to do all that.

The music video comes at a time when more Saudi women have started speaking out against gender discrimination in their country.

Great to see these women skateboarding!!

The last LA Girls Skate Session before Christmas was slated to be at Compton Skatepark, but due to huge crowds and a parade happening in the park,  the girls rallied quickly and via social media redirected everyone down the way to Watts Skatepark.  Love how fast a solution happened and how all the girls rallied and didn't bail on the session. That just shows how important these all girl skate sessions are to all the girls involved.

After the 2 hour session in the park, we all headed over to nearby Watt's Towers to do a group shot and a "skate through" with the towers in the background.

Thanks to Jazzmen and LA Girls Skate Sesh for creating these session for the girls, it's a lot of planning and work on their part, but the girls who show up to skate with other girls and be supported,  love it!

Girls Skateboarding 2016 - A Year in Review.

$

2016 saw a steady upward trajectory in women's skateboarding.  From the announcement that skateboarding will be included in the 2020 Olympic Games, to Transworld Magazine's first issue with a female skater on it's cover - and pages and pages of female skate coverage inside,  to the just released all girls skate film Quit Your Day Job it's been a damn good year for visibility in women's skateboarding.

To see exactly what we mean, take a look at just a fewof the articles and posts we have featured this past year. Our goal is always to post at least five times per week about girls in action sports, and this year there were many times when we were posting two to three times a day just to keep up with the news out there.

But this doesn't mean that we can sit back and coast in 2017.

We need to make sure there are more contests for girls, that prize money grows for women, visibility increases,  and that pro female skaters secure top sponsorship deals so they can make their living from the sport they love.  Here's to making all that and more happen in the coming year!

Happy New Year and keep shredding hard!

It doesn't matter what type of skateboarding you do, just get out and SKATE. Every damn day. Our founder, Cindy Whitehead, took a little trip to the south (i.e Alabama) this holiday season and found out that road trips are best when on a skateboard.  Exploring historic places, skateboarding on an empty  Go Kart Track, meeting people you normally would never meet when in a car, it's all best when on your board.

This is an ongoing photo/skate project called #Skateboardingthroughthesouth which can also be viewed on our instagram   @girlisnota4letterword

Our advice for the upcoming year?  Get out and SKATE!

On Saturday, January 21, 2017, the Women's March will be in Los Angeles to walk in solidarity.
The Women's March is a national movement to unify and empower everyone who stands for women’s rights, human rights, civil liberties, and social justice for all. It is a non-partisan and peaceful event.
The march is about supporting and inspiring each other and to remind our great nation to respect, honor and protect our diversity and our freedoms. Change comes from taking positive, constructive action.
Held at Pershing Square, the event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is welcome to all people locally and nationally.

Women will unite in Washington, DC for the Women’s March on Washington. We stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families -- recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country.
In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore. The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.
